There are three communities with the name Olmsted: North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Olmsted Township. In 1806, Aaron Olmstead, a wealthy sea captain, purchased the vast tract of land compromising of present-day North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Olmsted Township for $30,000.

Today the city of North Olmsted is the largest and most diversified community of the three. North Olmsted boundaries include Westlake to the North, Fairview Park to the East, Olmsted Falls to the south, and North Ridgeville (Lorain County) to the West.

There are over 13,500 households and a population of about 34,000 people. The median income for a family is about $62,000 with a per capita income of $24,000.

North Olmsted is best known historically for starting the first municipally owned bus line in 1931. It was the first in the United States. The city was also the first in the country to enact laws to ban the use of goods and materials produced under sweatshop conditions.

The city is also known for it’s shopping. Great Northern Mall has just about anything with many specialty shops and virtually all-major department stores. When it was built in the early 1960’s, Great Northern was one of the largest malls in the nation. North Olmsted also offers a high collection of automobile dealerships up and down Lorain Road.

The North Olmsted Recreation Center offers services to the young and young at heart to play and learn. The complex features indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, ice rinks, and a gymnastic center. There are classes for all ages and the complex is open to the residents of other cities as well.
